Who would have thought that the legendary “Hachiroku,” a car usually worshipped for its high-revving 4A-G engine, is now receiving a surprising new transplant from Japan? Racing House Sakai in Hiroshima has introduced a “game-changer” alternative: swapping a 4G15 engine into the AE86 chassis!

For us in Malaysia, the 4G1x engine family (4G13/4G15) is synonymous with the “bulletproof” engines powering thousands of Proton Sagas, Iswaras, and Wiras. But don’t be mistaken—this isn’t just any ordinary 4G15.

Our Magma vs. This “MIVEC Turbo”

Even though they share the same block code, the technology is worlds apart :

  • Evolution of the 4G14/4G15: While our local 4G13 (1.3L) and 4G15 (1.5L) are the backbone of our national cars, and the 4G14 (1.4L) is a rarer variant, the engine in this AE86 is the ultimate evolution of the 4G15 from the Colt Ralliart Version R.

  • SOHC vs. DOHC MIVEC: Our local Magma engines utilize SOHC 12-Valve technology. This AE86 heart uses a DOHC 16-Valve setup equipped with a modern MIVEC Turbo system.

  • Lightweight & Balanced: This 4G15 is actually lighter and more compact than the original 4A-G. This means the AE86’s famous weight distribution remains perfect, keeping the handling sharp and nimble in the corners.

Why Is This the “New Standard”?

  • Solid Power: In stock form, this MIVEC Turbo engine pushes out 153ps to 163ps.
  • “Monster” Potential: With upgrades like an S15 turbo and a Haltech ECU, this 1.5L can easily hit 300hp!
  • Cost-Effective: Building a 4A-G to reach similar power levels could cost tens of thousands, but this 4G15 setup is much more “wallet-friendly” and practical for modern tuning.
  • 6-Speed Transmission: This project is paired with a J160 6-speed gearbox (from the Altezza) for a more aggressive and engaging driving experience.

Could this be the new inspiration for retro car fans in Malaysia? Taking an engine we know as a “daily workhorse” and turning it into a track-hunting beast!
