Seal the Leak: Kia Cerato (K3) Valve Cover and VVT Solenoid Gasket Replacement

If you’ve spotted oil stains around your engine cover, it’s likely time for a gasket refresh. In this technical episode of the K3 Story, I am tackling a leak on my 2014 Kia Cerato, which has officially reached the 170,000km milestone. Over time, the original rubber gaskets harden and lose their ability to seal, leading to messy oil seepage.

What this DIY guide covers:

  • Engine Prep: Cleaning the cover before removal to prevent debris from falling into the exposed cylinder head.
  • Teardown: Safely removing the camshaft position sensor, ignition coils, and the 17 bolts securing the cover.
  • Solenoid Service: How to remove and replace the VVT solenoid gasket rubber—a critical but often overlooked seal.
  • The “Gum” Technique: Where to apply gasket sealant (sealant gum) to ensure a leak-free finish.
  • Precision Reassembly: Following the specific bolt sequence and two-step torque specifications (Step 1: 3.9–5.9 Nm; Step 2: 7.8–9.8 Nm) to prevent over-tightening.

Don’t let a small leak turn into a bigger engine issue. Follow along to see how to perform this essential high-mileage service in your own garage.
