Recently, I headed over to a venue that holds a lot of history—the Old Sungai Besi Airport (TUDM). Usually, this place is quiet, but last weekend it was screaming with the sound of revving engines and burning rubber. From local legends like Proton and Perodua to high-end Continental dragsters, the energy was off the charts!

Walking into the old airport, located right beside the Sungai Besi Highway, feels like stepping back in time. However, the “old school” vibe came with some challenges:

  • Cash is King: Don’t expect e-wallets here! The entry was cash only, and if you didn’t have small change, you were stuck waiting at the counter.
  • The Toilet Situation: It’s a long walk to the toilets, and guess what? No water! Luckily, I brought my own drinking water to save the day. Pro tip: Always keep a 1.5L bottle in your car for emergencies like this!

Local Legends: Proton & Perodua Represent!

The Malaysian car community never fails to impress. The variety of modification styles was “mantap.” Here are some highlights:

The Saga Squad

  • Old School Saga: I spotted a clean old-gen Saga rocking 15-inch white OZ rims, super dark tinted windows, and those famous Albino white taillights.
  • Modern Saga (VVT): The newer Sagas were out in full force, mostly sitting pretty on Enkei RPF1s and RP01s.

Rare Finds & Widebodies

  • Proton Arena: You don’t see these often! A rare local pickup gem.
  • Proton Waja: A Navy Blue beauty on SSR rims.
  • Proton Inspira: This one stole the show with a very aggressive widebody kit.
  • Satria GTi: Finished in a unique Purple Grey Metallic with Albino lamps.

The main runway was split into two zones: The Drag Strip and The Drift Pad.

The setup here was serious. I saw everything from:

  • VTEC Turbo builds (B-series bolt-ons).
  • Continental Power: VW Golf GTIs and Audi RS3s ready to launch.
  • The Beast: A Nissan GT-R waiting for its turn to dominate the 400m.
  • Interesting Tech: Noticed the drag tire setups—thick tires in front for traction and thin ones at the back to reduce weight and drag.

Over at the drift section, the smoke was thick.

  • AE86 with a Twist: A classic Hachiroku but powered by a Nissan SR20DET engine.
  • International Vibes: Met some talented drivers all the way from Singapore in their Silvia S13s and Cefiros with massive front-mount intercoolers.

A lot of you asked where my Saga was. Well, it’s currently in the ICU (the workshop) getting the rear bumper repaired. So, for this trip, I had to “pinjam” my wife’s car!

To top off the day, just as I was leaving, I saw a car with its exhaust literally falling off on the tarmac. A painful reminder that the car life isn’t always glitz and glamour—it’s a lot of maintenance too!

Despite the heat and the lack of water, it was a solid day for the Malaysian car culture. Seeing the community come together at the old airport is always a vibe.
