Long before modern GT races, Malaysia’s heart beat to the sound of the 12-valve Magma engine. The Super Saga series of the late 80s and early 90s wasn’t just a race; it was the ultimate proving ground for the national car, turning local heroes into household names.
Among the legends of that era was Kan Chee Hong. Driving for Team Mobil 1 Racing, Kan dominated the circuit, clinching back-to-back championship victories. His success wasn’t just down to driving skill—it was a masterclass in local engineering.
Building a Champion: The Mobil 1 Aeroback
Kan’s racing machine, developed alongside team manager Eddie Koay, pushed the limits of the Saga Aeroback platform. To stay competitive against the powerhouse PERT (Petronas EON Racing Team), his car underwent a radical transformation:
- Extreme Weight Loss: By swapping body panels for Kevlar and glass for Perspex, the car was stripped down to a lean 720kg.
- Structural Rigidity: An intricate 40kg roll-cage was integrated into the chassis, turning a family commuter into a stiff, corner-carving tool.
- Track Spec: Lowered by 3.8cm and sitting on 15-inch alloys wrapped in Yokohama A008 rubber, this Saga was built specifically to conquer the Shah Alam racing circuit.
The Super Saga era remains a peak moment in Malaysian automotive history, proving that with the right tuning and a “never-say-die” attitude, the humble Saga could take on the best and win.
